What is Anxiety?

Generalized Anxiety Disorder is a mental health condition characterized by  persistent and excessive worry about various everyday situations that is difficult to control and interferes with daily life. It’s more than just normal worry; the anxiety is intense, frequent, and sometimes without a clear reason. Symptoms of GAD:
  • Excessive anxiety and worry about not just one, but many issues, individuals, or events
  • Difficulty in controlling the feelings of worry, often without control in shifting from one topic to another

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
What is OCD?

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a mental health condition that involves a cycle of unwanted, intrusive thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviors (compulsions) that an individual feels driven to perform in response to those obsessions. These obsessions and compulsions can significantly interfere with daily life, social interactions, work, and school, equating in considerable distress. An estimated 8.2 million Americans are effected. 

Symptoms of OCD:

Common obsessions include:

  • Fear of germs or contamination
  • Unwanted forbidden or taboo thoughts involving sex, religion, or violence
  • Aggressive thoughts towards others or self
  • Having things symmetrical or in a perfect order


Common compulsions include:

  • Excessive cleaning and/or handwashing
  • Ordering and arranging things in a particular and precise way
  • Repeatedly checking on things like locks and appliances
  • Compulsive counting – objects, steps, words
  • Seeking reassurance from others

Eating Disorders
What are Eating Disorders?

An eating disorder is a mental disorder defined by abnormal eating behaviors that adversely affect a person’s physical or mental health. These behaviors may include eating too much food or too little food, as well as body image issues. Although many people may be concerned about their weight/body appearance, those with eating disorders may become fixated or obsessed with weight loss, body weight or shape, and controlling their food intake. Types of eating disorders include binge eating disorder, bulimia nervosa, and anorexia nervosa. An estimated 9% of Americans will have an eating disorder in their lifetime.

Symptoms of Eating Disorders:

Binge eating disorder:

  • Feeling that you don’t have control; you can’t stop once you start
  • Eating unusually large amounts of food in a specific amount of time
  • Eating even when you’re full or not hungry
  • Eating very fast during eating binges
  • Eating until you’re uncomfortably full
  • Often eating alone or in secret
  • Feeling depressed, disgusted, ashamed, guilty or upset about your eating


Bulimia Nervosa

  • Regular, often secretive bouts of overeating 
followed by self-induced vomiting or purging
  • Living in fear of gaining weight/trying to lose weight in unhealthy ways
  • Repeatedly eating unusually large amounts of food in a specific amount of time
  • Feeling a loss of control during binge eating
  • Using medicines that make you urinate, or laxatives/enemas to pass stool when they’re not needed
  • Fasting, limiting calories, or not eating certain foods between binges

Anorexia Nervosa

  • Restricting food, self-starvation, intense fear of gaining weight
  • Extreme weight loss or not making expected weight gains based on age
  • Tired, weak, dizziness, or fainting
  • Swelling of the arms or legs, feeling cold
  • Wearing away of the teeth and calluses on your knuckles from self-induced vomiting
